1.1. Introduction

Date Published

The Australian Trade Marks Manual of Practice and Procedures (the Manual) was originally developed to assist Trade Marks staff in implementing the provisions of the Trade Marks Act 1995 (the Act) and the Regulations (the Regulations).  The Manual was first issued in January 1996.

The Manual is an official publication of IP Australia, which contains detailed information on practices and procedures relating to aspects of the filing, examination, and registration of a trade mark.  It also includes the Quality Policy and Examination Quality Standards.

As part of our ongoing commitment to customer service, and in line with our undertaking to make IP Australia's home page our primary source of information, the Manual is available on IP Australia's internet site.

The on-line version of the Manual is the official controlled version and is updated as any new versions of parts are published.  Features include a search facility, and a link to an updates page.  The updates page gives information on when updates to the manual have occurred and which parts have been updated.  This information may be useful to those who hold a paper copy of the Manual and wish to know whether they have the most recent version of a particular part of the Manual.

Any suggestions or comments regarding the Manual are welcome and can be made via the customer feedback form.
