A clerical error is a mistake that occurs in the course of some mechanical process such as writing, transcribing, or copying. It is distinct from an error arising during the intellectual process (for example, from a lack of knowledge or error in reasoning).

An example of a clerical error is a person omitting information or inputting incorrect information due to an incorrect template document.

Clerical errors may also arise without intention, such as where a clerk misreads instructions and transcribes or writes the instruction as misread.

A poor translation is generally not a clerical error, as it arises from a lack of knowledge of the foreign language.
