2.11.5.5 Dictionary Definitions

A specification may rely upon the dictionary principle to provide a special meaning of a term or phrase for the specification and claims. Where the relevant term or phrase is used in the claims, the dictionary definition is necessarily an element of the claims. Accordingly, any lack of clarity in a dictionary definition must be objected to as a lack of clarity in the claims (see also 2.11.2.2.5 Dictionary Principle).
