4.1.4 Development of the Search Strategy

Date Published

Relevant prior art might be located in a number of locations, databases, against different classification symbols, and described using different terminology. The search needs to explore all these different aspects of the prior art base and requires a flexible and iterative approach. Effective use of the Three Person Team (3PT) is considered essential for formulating a search strategy that successfully addresses these issues.

Although the term “search strategy” is used, in reality a series of searches are likely to be carried out. Examiners are expected to implement a range of different approaches to finding relevant art (see 4.1.4.2 Search Strategy Considerations).
