10.2 IVDS
The Interactive Variety Description System (IVDS) is an easy to use web-based system that allows QPs to submit the detailed variety description for their application to the PBR office. The process of lodging a detailed variety description through the IVDS involves the following steps:
1. After logging into the IVDS, please select the application that you want to work on from the drop-down list and the click “select and continue”:

2. On the next page you will be asked to provide “Details of the comparative trial” and information on the “Origin and breeding” of the variety. If the description is based on overseas data, then you will be asked to provide the details of the overseas test report.

3. In the next page provide the grouping characteristics used to identify the most similar VCK.

4. Provide the name of most similar VCKs identified based on grouping characteristics provided previously.

5. On the next page (if applicable) please provide the name of comparator varieties that were initially considered but subsequently excluded from trial and provide details of the characteristics that were used as the basis for these exclusions.

6. Select the appropriate TG from the dropdown list. This will load the list of relevant characteristics and their state of expression from the selected TG required for the detailed variety description.

7. Record observations on the candidate variety by choosing the appropriate state of expressions for each characteristic using the drop-down menu. At minimum data for all characteristics with an asterisk must be provided. After providing all the required data, click “save and continue”.

8. The next section allows QPs to build characteristics which are not available in the TG or national descriptor. This is done by providing name of the organ/plant part, the context and all (comma separated) states of expression for the characteristic and followed by clicking “build characteristics”. Then provide the states of expression for these characteristics for the candidate variety using the dropdown menu.

9. Next (if applicable) record the details of any statistical analysis performed for the candidate variety and click “submit statistical data”. After entering all the statistical data, click “save and continue to comparator varieties”. This will conclude data entry for the candidate variety.

10. From the drop-down list, select the comparator variety for which you want to enter data next.

11. Record observations on comparator variety by choosing the appropriate state of expressions for each characteristic using the drop-down menu. At minimum data for all characteristics with an asterisk must be provided. After providing all the required data, click “save and continue”.

12. Using the drop-down menu, record the state of expression for the additional characteristics in the comparator variety.

13. Enter the statistical data for the comparator variety and using the drop down list indicate if the difference observed between the candidate and comparator variety is statistically significant. If the difference is significant then select P<=0.01 but if the difference is not significant select “ns”. After entering all the statistical data, if there is more than one comparator variety then click “continue to another comparator” otherwise click “save and view details” to see a draft of the description.

14. In this screen you will see the all the information and data that has been entered in one page. Cross check that all information is correct.
15. Nominate distinguishing characteristics that differentiate the candidate from the comparator variety by ticking the box next to the characteristics in the “Variety Description and Distinctness table and (if applicable) in the “additional characteristics” and Statistical table section of the description. After that click “send to PBR as a draft” to submit the draft description to the PBR office for editing prior to publication in the Plant Variety Journal.

16. Remember you can always go back to any section of the description by clicking the bar on the top of each page in the IVDS.

17. If you make any changes to the draft description, then you must go to the last section of the draft description and click “send to PBR as a draft”. Without this the changes made in the description will not be saved and captured by the IVDS and PBR office will not be notified of those changes.
