5.1.2. Applicant name: Individual (Australian and overseas, including joint owners)

The application must give the full name of the applicant. The application must have:

  • at least one given name in full
  • the full family name.

Given names

The application must provide at least one given name of the applicant. This must be the full name (e.g. ‘Jane Doe’, ‘Jane J Doe’, ‘Jane Jean Doe’, 'John Doe and Jane Doe’). Formats such as ‘J Doe’ or ‘JJ Doe’ are not acceptable.

Joint owners

The application must give the full name of each of the joint owners. The names of each joint owner must be entered into the database separately – they should not be entered as one single applicant on one line.

Overseas-based individuals

Many applications for a design in Australia are from overseas applicants. There are some ownership issues that can arise for overseas applicants. They are subject to the same provisions as domestic applicants – they must be a ‘body politic or corporate’ or an ‘individual’ in their country or jurisdiction. ​​​​​​​

The same rules apply with regard to providing a full name – both given name and family name.
