5.1.2. Applicant name: Individual (Australian and overseas, including joint owners)

Where the applicant is an individual, the application should provide the person's full name. This includes:

• At least one given name in full; and

• The full family name.

Abbreviated given names or initials alone are not acceptable. For example:

Acceptable

• Jane Doe

• Jane J Doe

• Jane Jean Doe

Likely not acceptable

• J Doe

• J. James DOE

• JJ Doe

• Jane D

Some individuals may have only one name, or may use a naming convention that does not follow a traditional given name and family name structure. In these circumstances the name might be acceptable, provided it is sufficient to identify the applicant as a legal person. The applicant must be a legal person and a person entitled to be registered as the owner of the design. If there is doubt as to the applicant's identity, legal personality, or entitlement, a written notice should be issued seeking further information or evidence.

Overseas applicant details

The same naming requirements apply to overseas applicants. An overseas individual should provide their full name, including at least one given name in full and their family name.

Joint applicants

Where two or more individuals are the applicants, the application must provide the full name of each applicant. Each joint applicant must independently satisfy the requirements for applicant name particulars and must be identified as a separate applicant in the application. For example:
