The IPC system provides definitions, warnings and notes to assist understanding and application of the symbols.

Definitions and warnings

Click on the respective symbol (as shown in the figure below) to display or hide the definition or warning in a separate window

  • Definitions provide information about limiting and informative references, which should be consulted during a search (see 4.2.1.1.5)
  • Warnings help draw user’s attention to the incompleteness of the reclassification process

Notes: usually provided inline with the scheme. Notes define or explain specific words, phrases or the scope of places, or indicate how subject matter is classified, for example if subject that should (and should not) be classified into a scheme, how a scheme should be used and where various subject matter is classified.
