4.2.3.2 The Australian Classification System - Discontinued

Date Published

The Australian Classification (AC) System was introduced around the time of the Federation of Australia and is unique to Australia. It is based upon a "Classification of Manufactures". It was in full use until December 1969. From January 1970 both the AC and full IPC were used in parallel in the Australian Patent Office until October 1976, when classification according to the AC ceased (except for a few isolated instances, where coding in the MBSS was continued). Since then the AC has been gradually phased out, and the patent specifications published before January 1975 have been reclassified according to the IPC by means of search material reclassification (SMR) projects.
