4.2.1.2.7 CPC Revisions

Date Published

CPC revisions occur quarterly with allowance for more frequent updates to increase the system’s ability to adapt to and incorporate filing trends and emerging technologies quickly into the scheme. Frequent revision provides a number of benefits, including allowing a quicker response to technology development and growth of patent applications.

The date-stamp [YYYY-MM] is added to the end of the titles of groups in order to indicate the year and month of introduction or scope change of a CPC group. Click on the icon indicated by the red arrow to display the date stamp.

Latest information about CPC revision is available in the official CPC website.

Reclassification of documents occurs immediately following the CPC revision. Progress of reclassification and directions to perform a complete search are indicated clearly in the Warnings. For example, the warning for F21V29/00 indicates that certain subgroups are no longer used for document classification as of 15 January 2015. The warning also provides information about the new corresponding subgroups and advises searching using both old and revised symbols for a complete search.
